in Mexico
Latin America and the Caribbean have a total of 150 UNESCO World Heritage Sites—and 35 of them are in Mexico! From ancient Mayan sites to whole colonial villages and extraordinary natural landscapes, there’s no dearth of historical landmarks and monuments in this fascinating Central American country. For filmmakers, that ensures lots of location choices but also the head-spinning task of choosing them! Don’t worry! Fixer Mexico can assist. Our production coordinator in Mexico works with film experts and journalist fixers to help you find incredible spots to film in. Want to get a head start? Have a look at our favorite spots.
Baja California
As you might have guessed from the name, this filming location in Mexico borders the US state of California. But, don’t worry, it’s still authentically Mexican. In addition, there’s a wealth of different landscapes from arid deserts and seafront cliffs to tourist-favorite beaches like Cabo San Lucas and, of course, Tijuana, a major border crossing. If searching for marine wildlife, your location scout can find you a perfect spot to film the thousands of gray whales that mate in the Sea of Cortés every springtime.
Chihuahua
Yes, it’s true, this northern Mexican city gave its name to the tiny dogs that sellers began breeding here in the 19th century. But film wise, it has more to offer! Location scouting will reveal awesome backgrounds like the 18th-century Cathedral of Chihuahua and the colonial-era Templo de San Francisco, both of which will need filming permits that your production coordinator in Mexico can organize. Then there’s the incredible Chihuahuan Desert complete with the huge sand dunes that formed the setting for Denis Villeneuve’s 2018 movie, Sicario.
Chihuahua
Mexico City
Mexico’s capital city is one of the most exciting filming locations in Mexico but it’s also one of the world’s largest cities! So, where to begin?! We suggest engaging a journalist fixer to find specific-looking locations. Hipster flair? They’ll direct you to the Roma neighborhood. For something more artsy, Coyoacán, home to Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul, makes sense. Art Nouveau style? They’ll point out the Grand Hotel Ciudad, on Constitution Square (better known as Zócalo), with its antique elevator and breathtaking Tiffany stained-glass window. Choices here are endless!
Puebla
Practically hidden away in the volcano-rich Valley of Cuetlaxcoapan, Puebla is one of the most underrated filming locations in Mexico. It has hundreds of centuries-old churches, chapels, and shrines alongside military buildings such as the 18th-century Fuertes de Loreto, the site of one of the most famous battles in the state’s history. About an hour outside the city, the Mesoamerican Cantona ruins offer a huge and historically compelling filming location in Mexico that is not as well-known as some of its other archaeological sites.
Puebla
Yucatán
Yucatán is situated on the Gulf of Mexico and is famed as much for its gorgeous beaches, such as those in Tulum, as its many Mayan ruins. With that in mind, your production coordinator in Mexico won’t have any trouble organizing location scouting in this Mexican state! The Great Mesoamerican Reef attracts hundreds of fish, turtles, and whale sharks, making it perfect for a marine-based video, while further inland, the Aktun Chen Natural Park boasts a remarkably intact 5 million-year-old cave system.
