Filming in Mexico

Finding a fixer
in Mexico

Filming in a foreign land can be challenging, even if that land is the stunning Central American country of Mexico. That’s why it’s always a good idea to have a local film fixer managing production issues on the ground—and that fixer in Mexico has to be us. It’s not just that we have extensive experience working with global brands and film companies, it’s also because we are native video production experts and can make filming in Mexico so much easier for you as a result.

Visa for Mexico

The good news is that filmmakers from the EU, Britain, the USA, large parts of Asia, and several other countries typically don’t need a work visa for video projects lasting less than 180 days. In this instance,  a tourist visa or an FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) will do. However, if your project lasts more than six months, you will need a FM3 Work Permit. Don’t fret, though—we’ll advise you on all visa-related issues to ensure nothing is overlooked.

Film Permits Mexico

Getting the necessary film permits to film in Mexico is a relatively easy but often laborious process. Filmmakers have to apply through the local film commission in the region where they plan to shoot (So, if you plan to film in various locations, that’s a lot of applications!) As your film fixer in Mexico, we’ll handle this for you. We’re used to working with different film commissions and can make sure the process happens easily and within plenty of time of the shoot itself.

Special equipment
renting info

You don’t need to worry about finding top-class filming equipment in Mexico. But who wants the hassle when you’re not on the ground here and you’re using Google translate to converse online with Mexican companies?! We’ll help you out. We have ties with several large rental companies across the country and can ensure you get any top-of-the-range or specialist gear you require. Plus, as a known film fixer in Mexico, we can access deals and discounts on full film gear kits.

Cultural facts

Something to be particularly mindful of when filming in Mexico is that things don’t always run on schedule here. Having a little flexibility and patience will go a long way, but ensuring that the production plan has a contingency for time delays is equally important! This is one of the reasons that visas (if necessary) and film permits should be applied for well in advance so that the production isn’t slowed down while you wait for them.

Weather when filming in Mexico

The weather in Mexico varies a lot depending on where you are. For instance, northern desert regions like Baja California and Chihuahua will obviously have a dry, arid climate with temperatures easily reaching 38°C (100°F). In the south, you’ll enjoy tropical weather while Central Mexico boasts a more balanced climate with warm summers and cool winters. However, wherever you’re filming in Mexico remember that, like most countries on the Pacific and Gulf coasts, hurricanes can be a regular feature of summer months.

Tax rebate in Mexico

Foreigners filming in Mexico have been enjoying tax rebates in the country for over a decade now. The main refund available is known as Eficine 189 and enables international media and video professionals to shave up to 17.5% off qualifying production expenses. There are a few further incentives too, which, if you work with us as your film fixer in Mexico, we’ll be able to fill you in on to see if you are eligible.

Filming in Mexico

With its stunning contemporary and historic locations, beautiful coastline, and inspiring desert landscapes, Mexico is a wonderful place to film. However, the hugely populated cities, different climates North and South, and the long distances between states can make filming here challenging–not to mention the fact that things can wrong or get delayed.

That shouldn’t put you off, though. As long as you have an expert fixer in Mexico like us in your corner, you can expect filming to be a success. We’ll take the pressure off you by helping you with visas, film permits, equipment rentals, travel, accommodation, and everything else needed for a smooth, professional film shoot.  That means all you need to do is what you do best—create video magic!
